Urban Rooftop Portrait Session
Project Overview:
This session was all about capturing a clean, modern urban vibe while letting natural light and minimal architecture do the heavy lifting. Set on top of a downtown parking structure just before golden hour, this shoot gave us a stunning, open-sky backdrop with concrete textures and city skyline elements—perfect for a sleek and understated portrait series.
The Creative Process:
1. Pre-Session Planning
We began with a creative consultation to align on vision and vibe. The client wanted something raw, simple, and cinematic—something that felt both editorial and personal. I suggested an elevated parking structure to provide a wide-open space with strong natural lighting and just the right amount of edge.
2. Location Scouting
I scouted the location a few days in advance to understand how light moved across the space and identified key framing spots—corners, railings, stairwells, and clean sky backdrops. The goal was to create a series that felt cohesive, spacious, and bold.
3. Lighting & Composition
We timed the shoot for late afternoon to take advantage of the soft, directional light as the sun lowered. I worked primarily with natural light to keep the look organic and real. I used leading lines from the structure and surrounding elements to create depth and draw attention to the subject, experimenting with symmetry and negative space to create strong, editorial-style compositions.
4. Direction & Movement
To keep things flowing naturally, I gave the client loose posing guidance with space for their personality to shine through. We focused on movement, posture, and subtle expressions to bring authenticity to each frame.
5. Post-Production
In editing, I leaned into clean tones and subtle contrasts—enhancing the mood without over-processing. A minimalist color grade gave the gallery a cohesive and timeless finish, with an emphasis on texture and light.
